New Mexico Becomes Battleground Over Abortion Facility

Construction has resumed on a taxpayer-funded abortion facility in Las Cruces, New Mexico, after more than a year of delays caused in part by pro-life efforts to discourage contractors from participating. The center, expected to open in 2027, would provide chemical and surgical abortions, including late-term procedures, and serve as a training site for medical students.

Pro-life leaders across the state have identified the project as a major threat and are now uniting in response. “We know that this is a strategic location for the governor to provide abortions to women from Texas and migrant women coming across the border,” said Dominique Davis, president and CEO of Project Defending Life.

New Mexico allows abortion at all stages of pregnancy and has seen a sharp rise in out-of-state patients since the Dobbs decision, with nearly 14,000 women traveling from Texas in 2023 alone. In response, pro-life groups signed a unity agreement on April 10, committing to prayer, collaboration, and public awareness as they seek to protect unborn life.
