The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) endorsed a letter urging the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to allow state lawsuits challenging mail-order abortion drugs to proceed. Acting ERLC President Gary Hollingsworth signed the April 13 letter, calling on Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to reconsider prior efforts by the Department to dismiss such cases while a safety review of mifepristone continues.
Katy Roberts of the ERLC emphasized the significance of this moment, stating, “During a critical inflection point in the pro-life movement and a time of transition at the Department of Justice, Acting Attorney General Blanche has an opportunity to lead the DOJ in upholding a culture of life.” The letter argues that states should be permitted to pursue legal challenges to federal regulation of abortion drugs.
The letter also cites polling indicating public support for stricter regulation of abortion pills. It warns that continued federal opposition to these lawsuits may carry political consequences. Multiple states, including Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas, are involved in the legal challenges, alongside support from numerous pro-life organizations nationwide.
