Hollywood Uplifts Sinners—But What Is the Spiritual Cost?

Hollywood Uplifts Sinners—But What Is the Spiritual Cost?

The film Sinners made history this week after receiving 16 Academy Award nominations, the most in Oscars history. Directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan and Wunmi Mosaku, the supernatural thriller has earned widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, following multiple wins at the Golden Globes. However, Christian leaders are issuing strong warnings about the film’s spiritual content, urging believers to practice discernment.

“I want to tell you the shocking truth about the recent Ryan Coogler film called Sinners. The truth of the matter is the film is disturbing,” said Dr. Kynan Bridges, senior pastor of Grace & Peace Global Fellowship.

Bridges acknowledged the film’s technical skill, but emphasized it glorifies “idolatry of demonic belief systems and the promotion of sensuality and perversion.” He highlighted scenes involving ancestral worship and necromancy, including one where “the main character is singing a blues song, but the song opens up a spiritual portal.”

“The essence of the movie Sinners is the rejection of Christ,” Bridges said. “There is a rejection of Christianity. There is a rejection of God.”
