Samaritan’s Purse has deployed an Ebola treatment center to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as the country battles a growing outbreak that has claimed about 220 lives and resulted in more than 1,000 suspected cases. Uganda has also closed its border with the DRC in an effort to contain the spread of the disease.
The Christian humanitarian organization airlifted more than 39 tons of supplies into affected areas, including a 50-bed treatment facility made up of modular tents. The center is expected to be operational within a week and will work in coordination with local health authorities.
Simon Herbert of Samaritan’s Purse UK said the ministry remains committed to serving despite the dangers involved. He explained that the organization views its mission as helping those in need in Jesus’ name while taking extensive precautions to protect staff members.
Samaritan’s Purse has responded to numerous disease outbreaks worldwide, including Ebola, cholera, diphtheria, and COVID-19. Franklin Graham, president of the organization, said Samaritan’s Purse remains committed to helping save lives and sharing the message that people facing the crisis are loved by God and are not alone.
