Former President Joe Biden received the Sonia Schorr Sloan Service Award from Planned Parenthood of Delaware on Thursday, highlighting his record supporting abortion rights and urging advocates to continue their efforts.
Speaking at the organization’s 22nd Annual Chocolate & Champagne Gala in Claymont, Biden reflected on the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson decision overturning Roe v. Wade and discussed actions taken by his administration afterward.
“In the wake of the Dobbs decision as president, I think I tried to do what I know Sonny would have been on the phone telling me to do. We took action; I signed an executive order to protect access to reproductive healthcare, including emergency medical care.”
His administration also supported efforts to help women travel to states where abortion remained legal and repeatedly sought to eliminate federal funding restrictions on abortion.
Biden’s record drew criticism from pro-life advocates, who cited his reversal of the Mexico City Policy, withdrawal from the Geneva Consensus Declaration and opposition to the Hyde and Dornan amendments.
