A Muslim father in eastern Uganda has allegedly killed his adult son after the son converted to Christianity, according to Morning Star News. Hamba Ahammada, 62, is accused of fatally attacking his 33-year-old son, Hamba Juma, with a panga knife on January 28 in Iganga District. Juma, a father of four children ages 12, 10, 7 and 3, had recently left Islam along with his wife, Nangobi Mariati.
Mariati recounted that after sharing meals together that day, her father-in-law requested a panga from their 12-year-old son. “After supper, my father-in-law requested the panga from our son, aged 12, without us knowing,” Mariati said. “Shortly he called my husband, ‘Juma, Juma, Juma – come, come, come.’” She added, “When he reached there, my father-in-law picked up the panga and started cutting my husband, and he disappeared.”
Mariati said, “My father-in-law together with other family members have been insulting us, sending harsh words promising to kill all of us for leaving Islam.” Police had not investigated at the time of reporting. Uganda’s constitution provides for religious freedom, though persecution cases continue to be documented.
