Report: Anti-Christian Hate Crimes Increasing in Europe

Experts and diplomats warned at the United Nations Human Rights Council that anti-Christian violence and legal pressure against believers are increasing in Europe, raising concerns about the protection of religious freedom. The warning came during a side event in Geneva titled “Standing with Persecuted Christians, Defending the Faith and Christian Values” during the council’s 61st session.

Anja Tang, executive director of the Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians in Europe, said the organization has documented a growing number of cases involving legal action against believers. “Several European governments have targeted individuals through criminal procedures for peacefully expressing their religious beliefs,” Tang said.

Participants noted that more than 760 anti-Christian hate crimes were recorded in Europe in 2024, while the observatory documented 2,211 violent incidents affecting Christians during the same year. Speakers also highlighted cases involving legal restrictions on religious expression and violence against believers.

Archbishop Ettore Balestrero stated that nearly 400 million Christians worldwide face persecution or violence, emphasizing that governments have a responsibility to protect religious freedom and ensure believers can practice their faith without interference.
