China Cracks Down on Faithful Believers

China Cracks Down on Faithful Believers

Authorities in China are escalating pressure on Christian communities, with Yayang Christian Church in Wenzhou facing a possible demolition amid a heavy police presence. Watchdog groups report that hundreds of armed police surrounded the church, dispersed or detained believers, and prevented documentation as cranes and bulldozers were brought to the site. The situation was described as “extremely tense.”

ChinaAid stated that the action represents “a serious escalation in the CCP’s systematic campaign of religious persecution under the policy of so-called ‘Sinicization of religion,’” which seeks to place all religious activity under state control. Photographs shared by ChinaAid founder Bob Fu show scaffolding around the church cross, with Fu stating that “part of the church building is being destroyed forcefully by the CCP [government].” He added, “The mobilization of hundreds of armed police and heavy demolition equipment against a peaceful Christian church is not law enforcement—it is state-sponsored religious persecution.”

Wenzhou, often called “China’s Jerusalem,” has long been targeted for its strong Christian presence. Reports indicate more than 1,000 police and paramilitary personnel have cracked down on multiple congregations, while local pastors were detained and information about the actions was censored online.
