The new animated film David is being called one of the most ambitious biblical animations to date. Produced by Angel Studios, the film tells the familiar story of David’s rise from shepherd to king of Israel in a vibrant, musical format aimed at families and children. It opens with young David, voiced by Brandon Engman, joyfully tending his sheep and saving them from a lion. Later, the prophet Samuel anoints him, singing a Hebrew blessing as a hush falls and nature itself seems to observe the moment.
Phil Wickham voices the adult David, who leads with courage and integrity while avoiding unnecessary violence. The film omits graphic scenes such as the beheading of Goliath, keeping the content suitable for younger audiences. David also avoids any romantic subplots, instead focusing on David’s relationships with his mother Nitzevet and sister Zeruiah.
In a moment that echoes The Prince of Egypt, David’s mother sings “Tapestry,” teaching him to trust God’s plan. The film emphasizes faith, courage, and God’s providence.
