WNBA player Sophie Cunningham is receiving support from the White House after publicly stating that biological males should not compete in women’s sports or share women’s locker rooms. In an interview with ESPN, Cunningham rejected accusations that she hates transgender individuals, saying, “I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’” She added, “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
During a White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended Cunningham after she faced criticism for her remarks. Leavitt said, “I know he is following the story. As you know, this is something the president feels strongly about as well, and the American people do too, that men should not be playing in women’s sports. It’s completely ludicrous that anyone could support that.” Earlier this year, Cunningham also publicly reaffirmed her Christian faith by being baptized at Christ’s Church of the Valley in Arizona, writing, “Thank you Jesus,” and later encouraging others by posting, “Loving Jesus is fun, try it.”
