Mel Gibson’s ‘Passion’ Sequel to Explore the Resurrection

Mel Gibson’s ‘Passion’ Sequel to Explore the Resurrection

Mel Gibson is revealing new details about “The Resurrection of the Christ,” his two-part follow-up to the 2004 biblical blockbuster “The Passion of the Christ.”

The original film will return to theaters Sept. 10-17 in a newly remastered 4K edition featuring a preview of the sequel. “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One” is scheduled for release May 6, 2027.

Starring Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus, the sequel will explore events surrounding Christ’s resurrection and what followed for His disciples. Gibson said the story will venture beyond events explicitly recorded in the Gospels, including depictions of Hell, fallen angels and the origin of Satan.

The filmmaker said he intends to explore possibilities within gaps in the biblical narrative while remaining consistent with traditional Christian teaching. The two-film production is expected to cost about $200 million.

The films will also depict the hardships and eventual triumph of Christ’s apostles following the resurrection.
