More than 2.3 million people connected to Moody Bible Institute may have had personal information exposed following a cyberattack claimed by the hacking group ShinyHunters, according to the breach notification service Have I Been Pwned. Moody said it was one of several higher education institutions targeted by cybercriminals and responded by implementing security protocols, launching an investigation with internal and external cybersecurity experts, and notifying law enforcement.
The institute said the investigation remains ongoing and has not confirmed the full extent of the data that may have been compromised. Have I Been Pwned reported that the leaked records include names, dates of birth, mailing and email addresses, phone numbers, genders, marital status, and documents related to donors, supporters, students, and alumni.
Moody encouraged those connected to the institute to monitor financial and online accounts, consider fraud alerts or credit freezes, and maintain strong passwords. In its statement, the institute added, “We are confident that God remains sovereign over every circumstance, and we trust Him to grant wisdom and discernment as we navigate this situation together.”
