California lawmakers are advancing Assembly Bill 2017 which would make Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha official state holidays if signed into law. Assemblyman Matt Haney introduced the measure during Ramadan, saying, “No worker will have to choose between honoring their faith and keeping their job.” He added that the proposal would affirm the importance of Muslim traditions for students, workers, and families across the state.
State Senator Aisha Wahab called the recognition overdue, arguing that Muslim communities deserve the same consideration afforded to other groups. Under the proposal, schools and community colleges could choose to close on the holidays.
The bill has drawn criticism from Rabbi Michael Barclay, who questioned why California would recognize Muslim holidays while not granting similar status to major Jewish observances such as Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur. Barclay also expressed concern about what he described as a growing political alliance between some left-wing activists and Islamic groups.
