The Islamic Republic marked the 47th anniversary of the revolution that overthrew the Shah and established the current regime under Ruhollah Khomeini with state-sponsored rallies filled with anti-Israel and anti-American demonstrations. As in previous years, crowds chanted against the United States and Israel, which Khomeini labeled the “great” and “little Satan.”
A prominent display included the burning of a statue of Baal, the ancient Canaanite deity frequently mentioned in the Bible. The statue was decorated with Israeli flags, a picture of President Donald Trump, and a Star of David before being set ablaze amid chants of “Death to Israel.” Protesters also trampled Israeli and American flags, displayed mock coffins of American military leaders, and showcased Israeli drones reportedly shot down during last year’s conflict.
High-ranking regime officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and IRGC Quds Force commander Ismail Qaani, appeared at the rallies in a coordinated show of support for the government amid ongoing internal unrest and rising tensions with the West. President Masoud Pezeshkian used his address to call for national unity following months of protests and a severe government crackdown, even as reports indicate thousands have been killed and numerous political figures arrested in recent weeks.
