God’s Army: Christian Volunteers Serving in Ukraine

Four years into the war between Russia and Ukraine, a growing movement of evangelical Christians continues to play a vital role in relief and rebuilding efforts across the country. As millions fled their homes following the 2022 invasion, churches transformed into shelters, and believers stepped up as first responders.

“One of the key missions of evangelical Christians is their strong commitment to humanitarian and volunteer service,” said former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. “They came directly to the soldiers, bringing generators, food, and protective equipment. … They stood with us day by day, month by month, and now year by year.”

Hundreds of chaplains now serve on the frontlines, ministering to soldiers amid the trauma of war. Volunteers like Pastor Andrii Skantsev in Kherson and “Crazy Anya,” who evacuates civilians under fire, continue serving at great personal risk.

These volunteers recently gathered at the 3rd National Forum of Ukrainian Christian Volunteers, organized by Mission Eurasia. “These are God’s people, His messengers … whom the Lord Himself encourages, inspires, heals, and restores,” said Alex Belev.
