Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher is drawing attention to the widespread persecution of Christians in Nigeria, criticizing media silence on the issue. Speaking on his talk show Real Time with Bill Maher, he said, “Nigeria, the fact that this issue has not gotten on people’s radar, it’s pretty amazing. If you do not know what’s going on in Nigeria, your media sources suck. You are in a bubble.”
Maher added, “I am not a Christian, but they are systematically killing the Christians in Nigeria.” He continued, “These are the Islamists, Boko Haram. This is so much more of a genocide attempt than what is going on in Gaza. They are literally attempting to wipe out the Christian population of an entire country. Where are the kids protesting this?”
According to Persecution.org, over 52,000 Christians have been killed in Nigeria since 2009, and more than 20,000 churches and seminaries have been destroyed. Senator Ted Cruz recently introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025, which would sanction officials complicit in the violence.
