Record Numbers Seek Baptism Across Europe

A record number of adults across England and France are preparing for baptism this Easter, with 21,386 in France alone, reflecting a 20 percent increase and a growing interest among younger generations, particularly those under 40. Many candidates are between the ages of 18 and 25, and a majority reside in urban areas.

Many cite personal hardship, spiritual experiences, or a deeper exploration of Christianity as key motivations, with 40 percent pointing to illness or loss and others influenced by Scripture or encounters with the faith. Women account for a larger share of those seeking baptism, and many come from non-religious or unclear backgrounds.

Archbishop Olivier de Germay said he was “struck by the suddenness and the scale of the thirst for God that is being expressed today.” Church leaders report that while most newly baptized believers feel supported, some face challenges remaining connected to parish life.

In response, dioceses are expanding efforts to disciple and integrate new believers, while also noting that this movement is prompting long-time Christians to reconsider and renew their own faith.
