New Study: Many Believers Say Bible Is ‘Unclear’ on Morality

A new nationwide survey reveals a growing uncertainty among American churchgoers about what the Bible teaches on critical social issues, particularly homosexuality and transgenderism. Conducted by the Family Research Council and the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University, the “Social Issues and Worldview” survey gathered responses from 1,003 adults who regularly attend church.

While 65% of respondents said the Bible has “clear & decisive” teachings on marriage, only 47% said the same about homosexuality, a sharp decline from 63% in 2023. Even fewer—just 40%—believed the Bible is “clear & decisive” on transgenderism, compared to 52% in 2023. A growing percentage now say the Bible is “unclear or ambiguous” or “does not address” these topics.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins responded to the findings by emphasizing the urgent need for biblical clarity: “Many pastors, many churches are not systematically teaching the word of God. And that’s really what we’ve got to get back to.”
